(just some rambling I wrote in March 2005 and found today, while reordering old files)

We don’t need to preserve forests to save tigers. It’s the other way around.

On December 14th, 2012, the Sandy Hook school shooting shocked me and countless other people worldwide. I was one of the people who spent hours online trying to know and to understand a bit more, if possible.
One of the things that impressed me the most was… a question posted to a backpacking forum, just a few hours after the shooting. Now that the first impact of the shooting on our minds is over, I feel it may be useful to republish, verbatim, both that question and its explanation from the person who posted it:

The Expedition Balance are the front pockets, or more exactly an essential accessory, of the Aarn Peak Aspiration bodypack. I had already reported about the carrying capacity and comfort of those pockets after one year of usage. This other page only contains some extra information about the same pockets that, for several reasons, had not found space in my previous articles.

Aarn bodypacks are an innovative, relatively complex but, in my opinion, quite effective and healthy way to carry stuff in the wilderness. I discovered them in 2008 and got for testing an Aarn Peak Aspiration that worked really well. I still have that bodypack and use it every time I go on longer treks or must carry very heavy or bulky loads.

As you can read in My first year with an Aarn bodypack, I’m a big fan of front/back balanced carrying systems for backpacking. A few months ago I discovered online an relatively new entry in this category, the Sportback from Symbiot Design: a 3.3 liters technical daypack, with several pockets, including a couple hidden ones, and an hydration pouch, which is worn like a vest.

Last week I asked Henry to tell me more about this new Tarptent. Here are the news, including a couple of pictures never published before.

Keeping outdoor gear dry in the wilderness: update on Ultra-Sil dry sacks

Making sure that your spare clothes, pile, sleeping bag and food remain dry even if it rains the whole day or you fall into a creek is an essential part of wilderness safety. One of the best compromises between effectiveness, flexibility and weight reduction seems to pack the essential items inside one or more lightweight, waterproof synthetic sacks.

What should a pack do? A pack for multi-days hikes must:

contain everything you need during the trek

being as light as possible

without restraining movements
